Single-chanhel Tactile Aid for the Profoundly Deaf

چکیده
In this study of lipreading with supplementary tactile input, normally hearing subjects with noise masking were presented with tactile information relating to the voiced/unvoiced contrast. Considerable training was required before subjects were able to make use of this information so as to gain higher scores for lipreading with tactile Supplement than for lipreading alone . These results are in cantrast with those from earlier experiments which showed that relatively little training was necessary for successful tactile perception of voice stress.

Vibrotactile Identification of Signal-Processed Sounds from Environmental Events Presented by a Portable Vibrator: A Laboratory Study
Objectives: To evaluate different signal-processing algorithms for tactile identification of environmental sounds in a monitoring aid for the deafblind. Two men and three women, sensorineurally deaf or profoundly hearing impaired with experience of vibratory experiments, age 22-36 years. Methods: A closed set of 45 representative environmental sounds were processed using two transposing (TRH...
متن کاملMicroprocessor-based hearing aid for the deaf.
A speech reception aid that converts speech into text by use of a microprocessor has been developed for profoundly deaf people. The present system automatically recognizes a spoken word and presents the corresponding text visually and tactually. The system, however, restricts the acceptable number of words and speakers. A new tactile mode applying the psychophysical effect of apparent movement ...
متن کاملEffects of a Wearable, Tactile Aid on Language Comprehension of Prelingual Profoundly Deaf
Factors influencing the use of nonacoustic aids (such as visual displays and tactile devices) with the hearing impaired are reviewed. The benefits of tactile devices in improving speech reading/lipreading and speech are pointed out. Tactile aids which provide information on rhythm, rate, intensity, and duration of speech increase lipreading and therefore facilitate gains in language comprehensi...
متن کاملUltrasound activates the auditory cortex of profoundly deaf subjects.
Using three-dimensional PET, the cortical areas activated by bone-conducted ultrasound were measured from five profoundly deaf subjects and compared with the cortical areas of normal-hearing subjects activated by stimuli through bone-conducted ultrasonic, air-conducted, bone-conducted, and vibro-tactile hearing aids. All of the hearing aids, including the ultrasonic hearing aid, consistently ac...
متن کاملVibrotactile stimulation: case study with a profoundly deaf child.
This case study reports results obtained from a young, profoundly deaf child, M, who was fitted with a single-channel vibrotactile device, the Tactaid I, at 29 months of age. Her progress in speech and language development was evaluated over a 14-month period. During this period, M learned to understand 101 words through lipreading and the Tactaid I, and to produce consistent approximations of ...
